This popular seaweed course is timed with the low-tide and is an opportunity to gain hands on experience of these amazing sea vegetables. Includes time indoors and outdoors on a rocky beach with drinks and tasters. All to the beautiful background of St Michael's Mount.Â
Who is this event for? Anyone* interested in seaweeds who is competent at walking on uneven surfaces and over rocks. Walking will up 3 miles in total, with a small proportion of this over rocks. The itinerary is loose, with time to relax as well as do and will flex to meet the needs of the group and individuals.
*Each course I have 2 'pay what you can places'. If the price inhibits you from attending and means you won't be able to pay for life's essentials, please get in touch. Honesty expected, no questions asked.
What to expect on a seaweed course:
- Learn about the sea and deepen your relationship to it
- Discover up to 8 edible seaweeds, how to identify them and their nutritional benefits
- Gain hands on experience of how to sustainably harvest your own seaweeds
- Experience seaweed as food, drink, climate protectors and wildlife habitat
- Find out how to protect seaweeds and join others in looking after nature that takes care of us
- Opportunity to buy signed copies of Rachel’s wild food and cooking books
- Follow up email including: guidelines on legal and sustainable harvesting seaweeds, seaweed recipes, additional seaweed activities and campaigns.
Itinerary:
Start: Walk together through fields to our base and be welcomed with seaweed drinks/tasters
Pre-foray: Health and safety talk, learn about how our ancestors foraged seaweeds and what we can learn from them. Prepare for our beach time.
Seaweed Forage: Up to 3-hour experience on the beach with the seaweeds.
Reflections: Sharing what we learnt and discussion about next steps for us and seaweeds.
What to bring and wear: Please read what to bring notes. (Bring lunch or eat beforehand, tasters provided)
