Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens and the surrounding area is full of wild and cultivated plants that can be used to make cordage (string). Discover how to transform common and exotic plants into simple plant fibres to make decorative and practical string for all sorts of projects.

Who is this event for? Anyone interested in plants, crafts and using natural and 'waste' materials (garden cuttings and weeds) and learning an ancient technique for practical and decorative projects. Suitable for beginners and those with previous craft experience.

What to expect on this forage and make cordage course:

  • A foraging walk through the sculpture gardens and surrounding area to gather materials to make cordage from
  • Learn about different plants and how to process them to make into usable threads
  • Discover and practice the technique of cordage making from 4 different plants
  • Enjoy a simple lunch at Tremenheere Kitchen
  • Get comfortable in the warmth of the restaurant/cafe at Tremenheere and make cordage together
  • Explore different examples of how cordage can be used
  • Go away with plant fibres to use on your own projects

Itinerary:

10am: Foraging walk around Tremenheere sculpture garden to collect and learn about plant fibres

12 midday: Arrive at Tremenheere kitchen restaurant/cafe, see examples of different cordage (string) and start to learn cordage making technique

1pm: Simple lunch of soup and bread (you can add additional dishes at your own cost)

1.30pm: Learn how to work with different plants, prepare fibres and have a go at working with several different plants pre-prepared and picked

3pm: Reflections on the day and leave with your own cordage and fibres to continue at home

Min/Max numbers: 3-8 adults. You are welcome to come alone or with others.

Dogs: Dogs are allowed on a lead on the walk, but will not be allowed in the restaurant (12-3pm) in the afternoon
