Green Sorrel Song
Ah, sorrel. The wonderful, light and sour qualities of these edible leaves inspired my Green Sorrel Song. Tweaked by the artistic ear of singer song-writer Kelsey Michael. It's short and sweet, or sour actually,
The words of this Green Sorrel Song tell of five of the qualities of Common Sorrel (Rumex acetosa). I'll tell you a little more about these aspects and the words of the song below.
Sorrel Light, Sorrel Limp, Sorrel Green
Common Sorrel leaves are often a lighter green than other leaves such as nettles or ivy. If every looks green to you, take a few minutes to look, really look. Notice the different shades, tones, textures and sizes. Sorrel leaves tend to be lighter.
The leaves are delicate and if you pick one, it will go quite limp in your hand after 10 minutes. Sorrel Green - This should be self-explanatory! The leaves are green. I needed one-syllable words for this song, so forgive me for the simplicity of this one.
The 'points' refer to the pointy lower parts of the leaves either side of the stem. These are really important details for identifying the plant correctly.
What does sorrel taste like?
Sorrel sour.
If you haven't tasted green sorrel leaves before, the taste is rather surprising! It's sharp, tangy, lemony, sometimes described as similar to apple peel A wonderful addition to sweet and savoury recipes.
